Press Release | Back and Forth

A Dutch illustrator, artist and gallery owner, Collin van der Sluijs translates his personal pleasures and struggles in daily life into his own visual language. He is widely recognized for his extraordinary dream-like depictions of everyday stories that question our personal lives, as well as society at large. Similarly, the Dutch artist Super A combines graphic design with painting to create work that evolves out of personal experiences and thoughts. The stories he creates balance between fiction and non-fiction. These two talented artists will join their forces in the duo exhibition at the First Amendment Gallery. Titled Back and Forth, the exhibition will feature new bodies of work by both artists, but also pieces that are the result of their collaboration.

Back and Forth

The exhibition Back and Forth is the resulting chemistry of mind waves between these two talented Dutch artists. In a very natural creative process, their two distinct styles push and pull in a complete harmony. Both having backgrounds in the Graffiti and Street Art, their studio work shows a great balance between rough and the smooth, the bitter and the sweet. The latest series of paintings by Super A tells a story of a story of the negative and positive experiences in the battle for balance, challenging the public with a dark sense of humor. The latest series of works on paper by Collin van der Sluijs is inspired by the time between making paintings where ideas and thoughts are free-flowing, chaotic, and can yet be ever so slightly poetic.

Collin van der Sluijs And Super A

Collin van der Sluijs is known for his beautiful portraiture of children and little furry creatures. Demonstrating an exquisite talent for texture, he uses drips, crude white lines, spray paint and collage. His work has been described as Street Art executed in a style that was half Monet, half Basquiat-like, with a highly saturated gritty urban color palette. An alter ego of Stefan Thelen, Super A is an anti-superhero who is amazed by rarities in our world and visualizes the self-side of society. He creates paints realistic images and fantasy figures, often combined with a social message. Rightfully called a multidisciplinary artist, Super A also creates sculptures, installations and sometimes collaborates with other artists.

Back and Forth at First Amendment Gallery

Since 2008, 1AM has thrived to serve their community of artists, fans, and organizations. As the gallery announces, the 1AM as we know it is dead as they usher in the future of 1AM represented by First Amendment Gallery, a brand new gallery facelift exhibiting urban contemporary artworks, 1AM Generator, a conduit for connecting creatives, ideas, community groups, and brands while acting as a platform for collaborations, and 1AMsf, continuing to serve artists, fans, and organizations with its custom art agency, experience offerings, and boutique in downtown San Francisco.

The exhibition Back and Forth will be on view at First Amendment Gallery in San Francisco from June, 8th, 2017, with the opening reception starting at 7 p.m.
